For those who don't know, a pergola is a simple structure covered with creeping plants that has neither walls nor roof. (Actually, there may be a roof, but not a solid one). The classic pergola is part of our garden paradise, and as such, creates a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. It can be made of wood, aluminum or other metal. Let's look at all options in detail:
1. Wooden pergola.
Wood is a material that provides natural beauty and elegance. As we said above, the pergola is a simple structure and as such you can assemble it yourself (if it is wooden). The elements include wooden columns and horizontal beams, which provide stability and shade intensity according to preferences. Columns can be installed on the surface of the ground, but they can also be below this level. However, I do not recommend the second option, because the soil is more or less hygroscopic and in the long term this can negatively affect the tree and the entire structure. The best option is if the columns are located above ground level. Before doing this, however, it is good to cast concrete in the place where they will be positioned. (Judge the area of the cement carefully, as a climbing flower or fruit should be planted near the column.) Then you need to fasten a small metal plate to the already poured concrete with dowels, which will fix the wooden column, as in the photo below. After placing the wooden element in the metal socket, use a level to make sure that your column is perfectly straight. Do the same thing with the others and you have almost finished pergola. The distance between individual elements should not be greater than 3 meters.
Wood is an ecological material, which unfortunately needs special care. It is good to process the material before starting the construction of the pergola. Its processing includes applying an anti-pest layer and a lacquer layer to protect the wood from the vagaries of weather. You will find a huge variety of wood protection products on the market, but I will let you in on a little secret. Before varnishing the structure, coat it liberally with kerosene. The most ordinary diesel for cars will protect the tree from any pests that eat it from the inside. Wait for it to dry and apply a varnish of your choice. Wood varnish has a protective function as well as color. Choose the color you want and apply with a brush.
2. Aluminum pergola. This type of construction is in no way inferior to the wooden pergola in the category of elegance. The aluminum pergola is elegant, beautiful and, most importantly, exceptionally strong and waterproof. It can be equipped with any type of extras that will give you additional convenience and comfort. This type of construction can provide protection against snow, rain and even the sun's rays and is therefore more attractive to owners of public places such as restaurants, swimming pools, etc. Regarding the ideas with which to decorate your aluminum pergola, you can add hanging pots, curtains, interesting candlesticks or lamps. The ideas are really many. You can try to plant a climbing flower near the structure, which will eventually cover the pergola, but most likely this endeavor will not be crowned with success, since the surface of the aluminum is smooth, unlike the surface of the tree, which can thwarted that idea. Another "problem" you may encounter with the climbing plants here is that the structure is most likely glazed on all sides (but you can always add artificial landscaping). Due to the nature of the material, this pergola can be made into any shape. From rectangular to corner pergola or even triangular. A corner pergola is a really beautiful option for your garden or business building. Another convenience that the aluminum construction can offer you is a retractable roof. The retractable roof can be retracted by itself when the weather is pleasant and extended when it is cloudy and rain is expected. The color of the perloga can be from classic white to black or even imitation wood. Aluminum does not rust, which means that special maintenance and care is not necessary, and in the long term it is very profitable to choose an aluminum pergola.
3. Bamboo pergola. Bamboo is a perfect way to show nature how much we care about it. Cultivated bamboo can completely replace wood. You would achieve a very original design if you decide to install a bamboo pergola in your garden. Bamboo is a light, flexible and extremely resistant material. It is not expensive and can be easily installed. However, this material also has its drawbacks, such as the fact that contains starch, which attracts various pests and requires periodic treatment with various chemicals. Or the fact that the sun and moisture have a detrimental effect on its structure. Despite everything, it is worth having such a pergola at home, because it will transport you to a maritime atmosphere, where neither wooden nor aluminum pergola are capable.Of course, regardless of the material, a construction is a construction, and like any other construction, you will most likely need the relevant permits and documents from an architect or engineer. Even if your project complies with all regulations and laws, such as height, size, etc., you can always seek help from an architect who will create an individual project for your needs.
For apartment owners, we would like to reassure them by saying that it is not impossible to build the perfect pergola on the terrace. The only drawback lies in cleaning. You should know that an aluminum pergola made of glass requires a lot of care and regular cleaning. Because of the shape, the roof will also need regular cleaning, because a lot of leaves and branches will collect on it from the wind.
